Measuring Your Pets

Whether we’re talking about fixing things or furry friends, the perfect fit is always important. It’s the difference between being comfortable and being awkward, being elegant and being boring.

Unfortunately, not all of us have a personal stylist – but we can be one! Sure, it’s great fun dressing up our cats, dogs and even the odd hamster but it’s also really important that we as pet owners make sure that our little friends are safe and comfortable.

The best way to do this isn’t doing what most of us do and picking a size we like off the rack but by breaking out a tape measure and making sure. It’s not as difficult as you might think and it will save you time and money, and it will keep your pet happy and loving their new look for longer.

 Measuring for a collar:

1. Loop your tape measure around the neck.

Depending on the size and breed of your pet, the collar might sit a little differently to what you expect, so make sure the loop has space for two fingers inside and then give that loop a wiggle to make sure it’s not going to slip off.

(If you don’t have a tape measure, you can use a piece of ribbon or string and measure it against a ruler.)

Now you’ve got the right measurement all there is to do is choose the style that best suits you both. A dicky bow collar for the gentleman pooch? Or a pearl necklace for the prim and proper pussy cat. Whatever you choose, remember the rules in the UK mean that you must have your name and address on your dog’s collar whenever they’re out in public, regardless of whether they’re on the lead or not – so make sure you opt for engraving or get a collar you can attach a tag to!

Measuring for a coat (or an outfit…)

1.Measure from the collar to the base of the tail

This will tell you how long the coat needs to be, and will avoid getting a coat that’s too long, covers the bum and risks… getting dirty.

2. Create another loop with your tape measure and slip this around your pet’s chest

Make sure the loop fits around the widest part of your pet’s body to make sure they have room to breathe and run around.

If, after measuring, your pet sits between sizes, always err on the side of caution and get the bigger size. The more comfortable your little friend is the more likely they are to enjoy wearing their new gift!

That’s it – you can now dress your pets in all the latest looks. From a fleecy winter coat to keep them warm and toasty to a thinner waterproof to make drying time after spring walks a breeze.

Take your time when introducing a new style when it arrives, double check when fastened that you can still get a couple of fingers between the collar and the neck and give your fancy new pet lots of love, so they know how fabulous they are!
